Building Relationships Between Disciples of Christ:
Evangelicals and Catholics in Dialogue

In John 17:21 Jesus prays that all Christians would be in fellowship with one another “so the world may believe” that the Father has sent Him. Our witness to the world is always strengthened when we make an effort to approach our fellow Christians from a position of understanding and love. This starts with conversation and continues with learning.

Why Dialogue is Important

Inspired by 1 John 17:21, Dr. Harry Strauss responded to the calling of the Holy Spirit and an invitation from Bishop Donald Bolan to the Saskatoon Evangelical Ministers Fellowship. On December 21, 2011 a group of 19 Catholics and Evangelicals gathered together to engage in meaningful dialogue together.

What a Small Group Looks Like

In June 2017, Catholics and Evangelicals gathered together to talk about what unites us and what we can learn from each other. As part of this conference, we walked though the first session from Dr. Strauss’ “Catholics and Evangelicals in Dialogue”. After the small groups worked through the questions from the first session, we gathered together as a large group to share our findings.

Small Group Discussion Guide

Over the next two years, the small group of 19 ate supper together, listened to a presentation by a Catholic and an Evangelical representative, then entered into a time of small group discussion. This format of fellowship-presentation-discussion was then opened up to the wider community, resulting in a joint statement, Called to Common Witness.

While there are many national and international ecumenical initiatives, Dr. Strauss felt the need for a resource that can facilitate dialogue in a small group setting. He has made his guide, Catholics and Evangelicals in Dialogue, available to Mere Christian Fellowship.

We encourage you to gather a group of Evangelicals and Catholics together and go through the dialogue yourself. We encourage you to continue that conversation on our Facebook page.

Project 17:21 Conference

In 2017, a small group of Evangelicals and Catholics gathered together for a conference in Langley, BC to talk about their shared faith and how we can learn from each other. We’ve made the recordings of that conference available here.
